eBay Canada Selling Fees Explained

Selling on eBay Canada involves several types of fees that can affect your final profit. The two main costs sellers pay are insertion fees when creating listings and Final Value Fees when an item sells. Additional costs may include promoted listing advertising, international selling fees, currency conversion charges, and optional listing upgrades.

The exact fees you pay depend on factors such as the item category, listing format, seller performance level, and whether you have an eBay Store subscription. Understanding these fees helps sellers price items accurately and calculate their true profit.

Final Value Fees (FVF)

eBay charges a Final Value Fee when your item sells. This fee is calculated as a percentage of the total sale amount plus a fixed per-order fee.

  • $0.30 per order for orders $10 or less
  • $0.40 per order for orders above $10

The total sale amount includes the item price, shipping charges, handling charges, applicable sales taxes, and any other fees collected from the buyer. Unlike some marketplaces, eBay’s Final Value Fee already includes payment processing costs.

The percentage portion of the Final Value Fee varies depending on the product category and whether you have an eBay Store subscription. Our calculator automatically applies the correct percentage based on your selected category and settings.

Insertion Fees

When you create a listing on eBay Canada, an insertion fee may apply. Most sellers receive up to 250 zero insertion fee listings each month, while eBay Store subscribers receive higher listing allowances depending on their Store plan.

Once your free listing allowance is used, insertion fees are charged per listing and per category. For example, if you list the same item in two categories, an insertion fee applies for the additional category. Insertion fees are also charged each time a listing is relisted.

eBay Store Subscriptions

Sellers can subscribe to an eBay Store to access additional selling tools and benefits. Store subscriptions typically include lower Final Value Fees in certain categories and higher monthly zero-insertion listing allowances compared to selling without a Store.

Store subscription plans available in Canada include Basic, Premium, and Anchor, each with different monthly pricing and listing benefits.

Factors That Affect Final Value Fees

  • Seller Performance Level – Top-rated Sellers receive a 10% discount on Final Value Fees for qualifying listings. Sellers rated as Below Standard incur an additional 6% Final Value Fee until their performance improves.
  • Item Not as Described Returns – Sellers with a very high rate of “Item Not as Described” return requests in specific categories may be charged an additional 5% Final Value Fee on those sales.

International Fees

If your registered address is in Canada and you are not using eBay International Shipping, an additional international fee applies when selling to buyers outside Canada. This fee is calculated as a percentage of the total sale amount: 0.4% for shipments to the United States and 1% for shipments to all other countries.

Currency Conversion Fees

If you list items in a currency different from your payout currency, eBay may convert funds when collecting fees or sending payouts. For Canadian sellers, the currency conversion charge is 3% on top of the base exchange rate used at the time of the transaction.

Sales Tax Collection

Depending on the buyer’s location, applicable sales taxes such as GST, HST, or PST may be collected by eBay during checkout. While sellers do not receive this tax as profit, it is included in the total sale amount used to calculate the Final Value Fee.

Because tax rates vary across Canadian provinces, our calculator includes an optional “Sales Tax” field so you can estimate how taxes may affect your total eBay selling fees.

eBay Promoted Listings Fees

Promoted Listings help increase your product visibility across eBay search results and product pages. These advertising programs are optional and use two main pricing models:

  • General (Cost-Per-Sale) – You set an ad rate percentage and only pay when a buyer clicks the promoted listing and completes a purchase within 30 days.
  • Priority (Cost-Per-Click) – You pay for each click on your listing while gaining access to premium ad placements and additional targeting options.

Optional Listing Upgrades

eBay also offers optional listing upgrades such as subtitles, bold titles, and enhanced gallery features. These upgrades can improve listing visibility but may add additional fees depending on the options selected.

Charity Donations & Fee Reductions

If you sell items that support a registered eBay charity, the percentage portion of the Final Value Fee may be reduced in proportion to the donation percentage. For example, if 50% of the sale price is donated, the percentage-based Final Value Fee is reduced by 50%.
