eBay US Selling Fees Explained

Selling on eBay in the United States involves several types of fees that can affect your overall profit. The most important fee is the Final Value Fee, which is charged when an item sells. Other costs may include insertion fees, optional listing upgrades, promoted listing advertising, and international selling fees. Store subscriptions, seller performance levels, and the product category you sell in can also influence the total fees you pay.

Below is a complete breakdown of how eBay US selling fees work based on current official policies. Our calculator automatically applies the latest fee rules to help sellers estimate their true profit before listing an item.

Final Value Fees (FVF)

eBay charges a Final Value Fee when your item sells. This fee is calculated as a percentage of the total sale amount plus a fixed per-order fee:

  • $0.30 per order for orders $10 or less
  • $0.40 per order for orders above $10

The total sale amount includes the item price, shipping charges, handling charges, and any applicable sales tax collected from the buyer.

The percentage portion of the Final Value Fee varies by product category and store subscription. In many common categories, sellers without a Store pay around 13%–15%, sometimes applied using a tiered structure (for example, one rate up to a certain dollar amount and a lower rate on the remaining balance). Store subscribers often receive reduced percentage rates in eligible categories.

Our calculator automatically applies the correct fee percentage based on your selected category and store subscription.

Insertion Fees

When you create a listing on eBay, you may be charged an insertion fee. Most casual sellers receive a number of free listings each month, while eBay Store subscribers receive significantly higher listing allowances depending on their subscription level.

If you exceed your monthly free listing allowance, an insertion fee is charged for each additional listing. The exact amount depends on the listing format, category, and whether optional listing upgrades are selected.

eBay Store Subscriptions

Sellers can subscribe to an eBay Store to receive additional selling benefits. Store subscriptions provide more zero-insertion listings, lower Final Value Fees in certain categories, and access to additional tools for managing and promoting your business.

eBay offers several Store tiers including Starter, Basic, Premium, Anchor, and Enterprise, each with different monthly subscription fees and benefits.

Factors That Affect Final Value Fees

  • Seller Performance Level – Sellers rated as Below Standard incur an additional 6% Final Value Fee on sales. Top Rated Sellers may receive a 10% discount on qualifying listings that meet handling time and return requirements. eBay seller performance levels
  • Item Not as Described Returns – If your “Item Not as Described” return rate is rated as Very High in a specific category, an additional 5% Final Value Fee applies to sales within that category.
  • Policy Violations – Additional Final Value Fees may be applied if transactions attempt to bypass the eBay platform or violate marketplace policies.

International Fees

If your registered address is in the United States and you are not using eBay International Shipping, an additional international fee applies when selling to buyers outside the US. This fee is 1.65% of the total sale amount and applies when either the buyer’s delivery address or their registered address is outside the United States.

Currency Conversion Fees

If you list items or sell on international eBay marketplaces, eBay may convert funds between currencies. For sellers registered in the United States, eBay applies a currency conversion charge of 3% on top of the base exchange rate when converting funds.

This fee may apply when listing items on international eBay sites or when payouts from foreign marketplaces are converted back to US dollars.

Sales Tax Collection

eBay automatically collects and remits sales tax for most US states. While you do not receive the tax amount as profit, it is included in the total sale amount when calculating your Final Value Fee.

Because tax rates vary by state, our calculator includes an optional “Sales Tax” field so you can estimate how it may affect your total fees.

Promoted Listings Fees

Promoted Listings help increase visibility in eBay search results and product pages. These advertising programs are optional and charged using two main models:

  • General (Cost-Per-Sale) – You set an ad rate percentage, and eBay charges the fee only if a buyer clicks your promoted listing and purchases within 30 days.
  • Priority (Cost-Per-Click) – You pay for each click on your listing and gain access to premium placements and additional advertising controls.

Optional Listing Upgrades

eBay also offers optional listing upgrades such as subtitle text, bold titles, or enhanced gallery features. These upgrades can help improve listing visibility but may add additional fees depending on the feature selected.

Charity Donations & Fee Reductions

If you sell items benefiting a registered eBay charity, eBay reduces the percentage-based Final Value Fee in proportion to the donation percentage. For example, if 50% of your sale is donated, the percentage-based portion of the Final Value Fee is reduced by 50%. The fixed per-order fee still applies.

Understanding how eBay calculates selling fees is essential for pricing items correctly and protecting your profit margins. Our eBay fee calculator helps sellers quickly estimate Final Value Fees, advertising costs, and other selling expenses so you can plan your listings with confidence.
